I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and he wanted to buy my old subs. So then he asked me so what do I have to do to make them work. I was like what do you mean. He said can I just put them in my trunk like they are and just hook them up and they will play.(the subs are not in a box that why i was like r u kidding) Then he says his friend has subs in his truck and not in a box and it sounds fine. THEN i was like either im stupid and didnt no this is possable OR they are both stupid and dont no what the hell they are doing. Cuz i was pretty suue you cant run subs like that in a car/truck. (free air i believe its called) Can someone give me some input on this. I no it sounds stupid but i just want to no LOL who knows maybe there is something i dont no.

Sure you can run subs free-air, they need t be designed for it though. And its not likeyou can just drop one anywhere in a vehickle and have them work well.

O ok so it is possable to do. thankz alot. I just kinda listened to him and was like yeah ok LOL. well now that I no its possable i guess there not as stupid as i thought they were. Guess im the dumb 1 now. Shows how much i no.

they really shouldn't make much noise, if any, possibly motor noise. Separating(sp) the front wave from the back is the way it works isn't it? Equal and opposite reaction being made unequal?

True, but with free air or infinite baffle subs you have to underpower them or it just sounds like garbage.

Running subwoofers infinite baffle is a little more difficult than "just put them in my trunk like they are". To do it, the rear wave and front wave need to be totally isolated from each other. Hence, the subwoofers need mounted to a baffle that separates the rear wave from the front wave, and it would need to be totally sealed to be sure there was no front/rear wave interaction.

From the sound of your friends comments, he was just wanting to sit the subs in his trunk and play away.......which no, would not work.

Get your friend to tell you more about the install. There are very few Woofers designed for IB.

There are more subs that would work than one would think //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
I think that would depend on how they plan on installing it. I have heard a few that sounded ok mounted through the rear deck. Kicker had some back in the day, not sure if they are still around though.

freeair subs are big here in Miami. Alot of the ghetto boys around here put a piece of plywood behind their rear seats and just mount 4 12" freeair subs to it. the whole trunk becomes like a giant box. I think kicker comps are freeair I know ElectroBass subs are they use them alot here.

just for clarifacation. free air and infinite baffle ARE NOT the same thing.

running a sub free air makes hardly any sound (obviously)

Technically if the trunk acts as an enclosure, then the subs aren't infinite baffle //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif It is an enclosed space, yes. But is should not affect the performance of the sub as an acoustic-suspension enclosure would.

And, I don't know what kind of subs those kids are using....but if they have a large Vas, then the trunk may not be big enough to allow them to actually perform in an infinite baffle enviornment. In their cases, the trunk may actually function as an enclosure.....which is not truly infinite baffle.

No, there are quite a few subs around still that will work infinite baffle.
