Recently bought a 97 civic ex and am looking to replace the battery. Its still the original battery, and since i want to replace it anyway and am looking to put a decent system in at a later time id thought id put something good up there. My question is since its such a small battery what all fits in the stock location, and what do you guys recommend? Thanks!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

i think a battery like the kinetik hc600 or hc800 would fit into your engine bay w/o any issues. i don't know about the 1400 fitting but either way it's a good battery.
I have a Kinetik HC 1400 that I am about to stick in the engine bay of a 1997 Civic EX Coupe! The only difference is that the terminals are not reversed so I am waiting on some extra 1/0 wire to come in so that I can start off my Big 3 by extending the ground wire. While I am at it I will replace the engine grounding strap too!

ETA: To the OP, you have a 1997 Civic with the original battery? My late wife had the 1997 Civic that I am driving since it was new and I am already on battery number four or five! Sadly, I still haven't installed the sound system, so I am sure the alternator is next thing to go.

ETA2: The HC 1400 dimensions are: 9" x 5.3" x 8.1" AND the 51R dimensions are: 9 3/8" x 5 1/16" x 8 13/16 "
