For those that went or graduated from college/university...

Got my bs in biology in 4 years. College years were fun, way too much partying though. School was a good experience but it did not prepare me for my currentjob in pharmacy nor get me accustomed to "worklife." School did however teach me how to deal with people other than who i'd grown up around (black guy, jesuit college. Culture shock.) So I was able to adapt to ultra-affluent people better than some of my other afro-american brethren. May not seem to matter, but when ur livelyhood is on the line its good to understand how the ppl around u think.

For the OP realize america is a GATEKEEPER society and college degrees are used not to advance u, but to keep people out of certain careers. I mean most jobs train u when u start, you really dontuse your degree unless its a highly specialized field.

Also keep in mind u will be working til about 65. Take all the time u need in school, don't rush through in 4 years. All you have to look forward to is worklife anyway. Whatever your passion is persue it, and you'll never "work" another day in your life once u land ur career in impassioned field. And good luck

Spidermonkey, That's you. I have a person who works for me that has no degree. His company employed around 35 people before the economy went to crap. If we can survive when college dropouts are looking for handouts, they need not apply. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Dave Thomas, Bill Cosby and several other highly successful people have no formal eduction. Although Cosby received his degree in teaching later in life. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.

VWBobby. That's you. And that was my point. You can't make a blanket statement like 'degrees are a scam bro' because it simply isn't the case in all situations. If you want to be a laborer, you don't need a degree. If you want to be a lawyer, you do need a degree.
Degrees are a "scam" in that before all these collges/universities poppd up skilled labor just did apprenticeships. Colleges are a business and are out to make money so in profiting off their students and not guaranteeing them employment after matriculation the process is suspect. But that's western education as it stands :/

Edit: I swear I can spell, phone can't keep up with my typing

i didnt go to college and dont regret it for a minute i make more money per year than 95% of the people who i went to hs with that did so i feel i made the right decision for myself but i wish you luck in your schooling and hope you figure out what makes you happy in life. you dont want to be miserable with whatever you do thats for sure.

1. BA Structural Engineering 2. 4 years I think, time frame was a little hazy lol

3. Didn't mind it

Wish I would have done something like that since I grew up in the construction life and have a good grasp on a lot of the technical stuff.

Who the fuck is bugging anyone? We're having a civil conversation here. Go stick your dick in a chicken and leave the adults alone. Those are not real colleges and should have no baring on this conversation. I see where the confusion is. A real college is accredited. I agree that those silly 'trade' schools are a complete bucket of fail.
The same is true foraccredited schools. Never can they guarantee u employment simply by graduating. Back in the day when ALL careers had apprenticeships u had guaranteed work after learning the business/trade. These days job placement is more who u kno not what degree u have.

i think you maybe need to reevaluate yourself, and what you really want in life. i know this sounds crazy, but a +++ shroom trip may be just what you're looking for to see things from a different perspective.

1. What degree do you have (BA, MS and what field)?

Associates in Computer Info Systems. Going for my Masters though. Right now Ive got 2 semesters before I have my Bachelors.

2. How long did it take for you to finish each degree?

3 years for my associates. I took 2 semesters off when my daughter was born. From start to finish though it will be 5 years. There are only 2 years between my associates and masters work.

3. Did you hate or love school?

Im sick of it, but if you want to make money you have to do it. The Associates degree is the new high school diploma.

4. Do you have a career in the same field as your degree?

Kind of. Im the IT Manager/Office Manager for a landscaping company.

5. Are you happy with your job and money made?

For now it pays the bills. Almost double what I was making, but no where near what it should be in my field. Im only there until Im done with my degree because the company perks are great. They pay full health insurance, company car, cell phone, plus my pay check, work around my school schedule, and I get over time every two weeks.

6. Did you feel like school was a waste of time?

No.

A masters is easier and faster to obtain than bachelor's degree.
I quit about halfway through my MBA classes. I realized I was paying 2400$ per class and most of it was bullshit or things I could research on my own. After all my time and money invested my best prospect of creating wealth for myself is my farm LOL. I did learn some stuff that I'm glad I did, but mostly a waste of time and money.

My .02$ If you are getting a specialized degree of something that's actually in demand it's worth it. If you are getting a bull$hit degree from an ivy league school it's worth it (because of WHO you will meet). Otherwise, enjoy telling people about history as you're pumping coffee at Starbucks.
