I have a few questions for anyone that wants to answer them.

1. What degree do you have (BA, MS and what field)?

2. How long did it take for you to finish each degree?

3. Did you hate or love school?

4. Do you have a career in the same field as your degree?

5. Are you happy with your job and money made?

6. Did you feel like school was a waste of time?

I ask these questions because I am in a bit of a dilemma. I really dislike school, I didn't care much at all for high school, college has been okay but I hate the stress of finishing essays and passing class/GPA goals.

I have been working on a bachelor's degree for about 4 years now. I have switched majors 4 times; general studies, kinesiology, biology and now history. I really wanted to get into zoology and ecology but after taking a few biology classes I realize I hate the classes and math requirements. I almost have my history degree and need another year but History teachers only make about $35K in my area with just a BA. Not to mention that teachers aren't really in high demand except for science teachers.

So after all this stress it doesn't seem like it would be worth it, especially if I am forced to find a job that has nothing to do with my major. History is my passion but it seems like their jobs aren't in demand or pay well. I go to school hating it most of the time feeling like I would be better off just working a blue collar job full time. I do want a degree though and not because my parents are pushing me to get one.

My mom told me about her friend's daughter who just got a teaching job, but still needs financial support from her parents to pay bills. Just seems kind of pointless to go through the work if I can make the same money at a job that doesn't require any college experience.

Sorry to come off as emo or whatever, just please give me some input if you guys went through college and what you do now.

BA in Electrical Engineering (close to it, lol)

It will have taken me 5 years in the spring when I graduate

I hate it sometimes and tolerate it most of the time. You have to take the good with the bad, yeah I've had to take a lot of dreadful classes but I've also taken a lot of classes I really liked. Just depends on what material is being covered in that class.

I had an internship for 2 years in my field, I liked it.

The money I made at the internship was great, $17 an hour while still in school...

School is never a waste of time. No matter what anyone tells you, everyone wants to feel like they've made a difference in the world somehow with their life. I'm not saying everyone wants to be president or re-invent the wheel, but everyone wants to feel like they've contributed something to society, it helps with their image of self-worth. The people with the biggest impact are usually educated, you won't change the world with a low-level blue collar job.

If education is really what you want to do then the money shouldn't matter.

I went to Devry for Bachelors' in Electronics Engineering and was a military qualified Sound navigation and propagation technician for years. It was ok, the college part, stressful only because of kids, lol. But well worth it. i have a question for you, though.....are you doing it locally or one of those online degrees? I ask because there is quite a difference with stress factors. I cannot give advice on local college involving influences and such in the concentrated mind.

So, here is my advice, though it may not be as great as others who did attend locally. Anyway, regardless of that aspect, in general, don't concentrate much on the money aspect of it as long as you enjoy it.

Here is something that I do not tell people because I do let it get to me, but I feel comfortable here and hope I am not judged the wrong way as I am just trying to live happy. I work as a janitor at my other job. I am happy with it, though sound is and will always be my passion. I do own the business of car and home audio reproduction locally, but my other job, people ask me why. I tell them, so I can concentrate on my family, and my business. There is no stress in that job AT ALL. No brain work. I can concentrate on other things while I am cleaning and actually came up with quite a few ideas for that matter during that for some sound testing, lol. But you notice I do not have a job in drafting, or electrical engineering? Though I went to school for it, I do not want the stress they deal with when I also own a business on the side and support a family of four at the age of 29. I have done many great things in life and some which I am not allowed to talk about.ever, but Im proud of what I do now. And that is what matters. Financially, its kewl. Not too much stress there either, but with two jobs, and the wife with a job, we make it. So, my advice is, if you are trying to find a job jsut because it may pay well ( and Im not assuming you are, this is just to help in case you thought about that), then that would be the wrong way to be happy. If you find a job with history, go for it. If it doesnt work, then you will have history yourself. never get stuck, always move forward until you are happy. Thats about all I can say right now about it. I hope it helps.

1. Associate Degree in Liberal Arts

2. 2years

3. Loved it, Chiks Chiks and more Chiks

4. Technically Liberal Arts isnt a field. I transferred to a 4 year and first semester in I aquired the business i have so i didnt have time to finish. I want to finish out sometime soon hopefully, even if its online. Not just about having the piece of paper. what it CAN do for you. Not always does right away.

5. Most people i dont think would say the love there job and pay, it takes time and hard work for alot of people.

6. School is what you make of it. Alot of people waste the oppurtunity and its not just about having the piece of paper, alot of employers only hire people with a min 2 yr degree because of the ethic it takes to GET that piece of paper. Alot of people drop out of college, dont go, and obviously a ton that cant afford it. College is a great time in your life, so man up, study up and get that degree!

And if your really into history as i was, buckle down, get that masters and then go teach at a university or tech school somewhere.... then youll get into the good pay //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

1. BA business

2. 3 years

3. Love/hate. Looking back now I miss it greatly

4. Business so my degree applies anywhere really

5. Yes and no. I wish I was 5 years older back when a degree automatically meant good money. My job will pay off in the next 5 years however, as I am practically guaranteed an amazing position with a very potent company.

6. No, but I do suggest getting at least a Master's. This puts you in the top 10% of Americans, and sets you up for a lifetime of success as long as you apply yourself and adhere to moral standards

Haha Spider Monkey, you were helpful at first but now you're back to your trolling ways.

Thanks for the responses everyone. It is definitely a confidence booster when hearing other college grads say its worth it. I'm not too concerned about the money, my mom has been teaching for 26(?) years and makes about $55k w/ good benefits, this is at one of the lowest paying schools in CA I think. I could live on $40k + the property rent I will inherit eventually. But my concern is about supporting a family, guess I just have to find a woman who makes a decent income too. But, that's a long ways off.

Oh, I am working on a degree locally. I have been at 2 CC's and now I am at Boise State University. That's one reason why its taking so long, I haven't gotten all the classes I need when I need them, some credits didn't transfer and the switching of majors. Guess I will just go at my own pace and see where I go.
