I've never personally heard anything from focal, but they make highly regarded home speakers. I've heard focal tweeters are harsh.

What are the best comps for under 300 that will get me a good balance of midbass and highs

I will have 1 or 2 kicker 12L7s and I need to have the comps balance out the bass

I had those in my mustang, they were a great set of speakers. I recommend a nice amp if you want to hear them like they are supposed to be heard, because if you power those with a Profile amp or something lowend they will definately sound like shit.

Also beware of online retailers selling the Focal speakers, I heard a lot of them are the lower-end Focals rebadged or they're not really Focal drivers at all, and they're rebadged.

i view focals and ranbows (rainbows more so) as a benchmark in car audio

I like focals a bunch, but you have to like a bright tweeter, because some of them will saw your ear off. I prefer a silk dome. I have heard several sets of focals and really liked them, but I prefer Dls- smoother and more natural sounding.
