Flared ports...how you do that

So I was just checking out SSA forum andsaw these flared ports

I understand that you have to cut slots in the board to create the curve, but how do you get the mdf to bend like that?

edit* the wood is very thin on the other edge of the board so it just flexes but does not break

What benefits do you get by eliminating the 90' angles?

You can see the depths of his cuts. Looks like at least 5/8" deep, if not 11/16".
