first world problem: alpine 9886 with ipod - goes back to first song when cars off

this is my third or forth time doing this setup and the first time having this problem. currently i have an alpine 9886 hu--> alpine kce-422i ipod cable --> scosche passport charging adapter --> ipod. in my other setups it works perfectly. the ipod stays connected in my car 24/7 and only comes on when the car is on so it charges while playing my music and i never have to remove it. also, the big thing, is the music picks up where it left off whenever the car starts back up. this has been the case with multiple head units (9883, 9887, 98xx) as well as with multiple media sources (big ipod, small ipod, iphone 3gs, iphone 4s, iphone 6)

the problem:

when i installed the current (above) setup with the 9886, every time i start the car, the head unit plays the ipods first song instead of picking up where it left off. sooooo every time i get in my car i have to navigate through the ipod via head unit (search -> artists -> pick an artist -> pick an album -> pick a song) instead of just starting up and going and its really pissing me off.

is this normal for this head unit? im confused because ive ran this same setup on higher and lower grade alpine head units and this is the only one that does this.

My 9887 picks up where it left off. I use a generic eBay charging adapter though; it's the equivalent of the ice-422i but upgraded for the newer iDevices. I would think the 9886 would do the same.
