Well as you may know I recieved a 12" DP a few months ago and the surround crapped out on me so I got a recone from IA. I just ripped everything out today and won't be starting anything like cleaning the gap or the landings until tomorrow, but at least I got the ball rolling on this. One thing I noticed about the original soft parts and the recone was that the original former (from the bottom of the spiders to the tip of the coil) is about 1/8" longer than on the recone I just got... Will this allow for me suspension travel?

And as you will notice, the old coil is quite a bit lighter than the new coil, but the old coil has always been that really light color, so I'm not sure what to think about that..

Also, as you will notice in the last picture, because of the surround being torn, the former was rubbing on the pole vent and actually rubbed through the former in one small spot, and the pole vent is scratched up a little, but will this affect anything?

any suggestions on material to remove the surround/glue? I ended up using a scotchbrite pad bit + air compressor, it worked out really good but I did go through 3 scotchbrite pads, and 3 sanding disc's for the spider.

Acetone works well.
I thought DP's came with triple spiders?I think I see a forth in there though.Or is it just me....
My DP did come with 4 spiders. I'm thinking this wasn't a normal sub "off the line sub" when I took it out and noticed the former was longer than the new one, it had 4 spiders, the coil was already discolored(light colored), and the surround had a small scuff in it when I first got it (didn't affect the tearing you see in the pictures, but it's like it had already been used some for testing). Now I'm not sure how many spiders the new cone had, but it's not as thick as the old spiders so I'm guessing this one only has three after what you just said.

And I thought the purpose of the pole vent was to release the heat built up by the coil, yet there is a cap over the vent on my sub. Is this normal for the DP's?

Straight off the website...

Triple Black Progressive Spiders with Woven Tinsels

So why exactly did my old one have 4 spiders?

Maybe Nick can chime in on this one.

detaching the basket from the motor helps so you dont crap up the gap....and then just use a flame to burn off the old spider then use aircraft paint remover to get the old ca glue off....let it sit and the old glue should bubble up and can be brushed off with a steel brush. NO marks in the basket. that would cause the recone to not sit right.

Wow there are some differances then the ones I have seen reconed. The black cap over the pole vent is weird. The extra spider isn't so bad.I would assume this is not a regular production DP.Or a custom built one.

With the pole vent caped that would build back pressure on the cone which might explaine the extra spider.
