If you are bottoming a speaker out it is nothing short of user error...I have been testing this for a few weeks now. I run 18's with bp. I put 2,000 watts to it in 6 cubes sealed. It took it OK, not great, amp had to be so finely tuned it was a pain in the *** all the time. EXTREMELY low low bass, not much else besides low stuff. I had some issues with bottoming it out (what I believe was bottoming out..). Then I ran 1,100 watts to it. SQ was a little better and it wasnt phased at all.
Then I dropped them in a 4 cube sealed and threw 2k at 1ohm. The sub loved it. Still needed to adjust amp right on the money, but WOW.
Next was 750 watts. Amazingly still loud yet noticeably different with great sq.
All in all, I would say the 18 can handle 1800-2000 daily in the right box.

You didn't have a subsonic filter set properly (2-4 Hz below tuning frequency of enclosure)..or if it was sealed it was either too large, or it leaked.
As far as power handling...we say..2-400 watts of additional power handling depending upon application. So that would be ~1300 watts...
Thats because you have all the gain down //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gifI got a kicker ZX 1500.1 on my FI Q 15'' takes it like a champ..
