feels like my w6 is lacking loudness or deep bass

I can finally confidently say that this thing hits the lows of a 12'' and has excellent output considering its a single 10'' size and in a small box. It beats deep like a 12'' with clean, tight solid bass with no distortion or impurity in the bass.
The size of the sub has nothing to do with how low or how high it plays, frequency wise nor does it determine transient response (ie, you can have an 18" sub have better sound quality than a 10" sub and have better transients). T/S parameters, enclosure, and vehicle determine that. I just had to say this because misconceptions like this bother me lolz.

You turned the boost all the way up lol? This is why people say JLs blow easy right here. Stereotypical JL buyer.
He didn't say that though? Got to read a little better. He said he cranked the gain. Turned the bass boost all the way down, and then turned the volume up on his head unit. I still don't condone what he's doing at all. I've only seen a few jl audio subs, and most were blown. Cranking the gain on the amp and blasting the volume is most likely the reason for these blown subs. But you can't hate on the OP for something he said he didn't do when there's many other things he's done wrong lol.

Wish him well on beating down the block though.

Ok, so I tuned it again and this time I called JL to finally get this right. They had me shut everything on the HU off and disconnect the bass knob and turn all the dials down on the amp. I played the 60hz tone , set my HU to 35 out of 40 volume and began to raise the gain. I held it literal to 34.6 which is what 600 watts x 2 ohms = 1200 then square root equals and then I connect my wires back to the woofer and set my HPF, LPF etc etc. It sounds really good now. I guess I was tuning it incorrectly. The bass sounds hard yet very clear, (although when I had the gain up it pounded much better ) I have to listen to this for a while before I can decide if it is the best tune yet but so far it sounds like I got it correctly. I can actually hear bass on all sangs and before I could not, it would only pick it up on some songs and less on others. I hope I didn't cause any damage to the woofer but I only cranked it for a few minutes , I didn't smell hot glue or hear any clipping so I think Im ok. Thanks again though you guys opened up my eyes. All of your constructive criticism is appreciated.

Ill link them to here so they wont. JL isn't a bad brand, its just a name brand and with all name brands, you pay for the name
You pay more of course but it's also one of those things where most consumers in general know what they're getting. Kind of like Apple, it's overpriced hardware compared to Windows OEM systems but you know what you're getting as the product line is more streamlined, tried and true and heavily reviewed with often positive experiences while others in the PC market act as if they throw various products at a wall and see which sticks and constantly change the look and quality of their hardware. So some audio brands will make an awesome amplifier/subwoofer..etc then suddenly change it completely, not always for the better or get into financial trouble. They drop in and out of the enthusiast fan base, likely based on sales but it's funny to see once great brands like Orion suddenly have to advertise that they have gone back to old school and market it towards guys that come to forums like this with better hardware and quality...then in a few years they'll cheapen it up cause you guys stop buying them cause you're bored with them or another brand suddenly got "cool" or whatever and then they have to market an "updated" line of products to the "Pyle" crowds and the cycle starts all over again...at least that's how it seems to me.

JL seems more consistent than many and doesn't change their product line as often. Also JL products and marketing have a similar metro ****** look that Apple and Bose does, apparently it works well. But at least most people know it's going to sound good and last for the most part even if there is better/cheaper out there, it becomes irrelevant since most have no way to experience a brand like Sundown for example. Which may be fairly popular now, but in a few years some other brand will be with the "in" crowd and SD will have to come up with a different marketing tactic.

I don't think the enthusiast market is really a very consistent crowd to make products for when it comes to any product really.

Well Im an old dude at 37 and I remember when I was a kid in the early 90s Rockford Punch was a great woofer, then Kicker became very popular but one woofer that hardly no one had but was highly respected was JL audio. You only saw them in the cars in shows or what I thought were big drug dealers , I grew up in Chicago so in my mind all the guys with the flashy cars were drug dealers. So to now own one is a bit mind blowing but I truly understand why. As low as my volume is the bass comes thru nice and clean, its like no woofer I've ever had before and I've had RF punches in a custom box, CVR'S in both ported and sealed, cerwin vegas, pioneers, L7 and so on and so on. JL and not because I own one because I was going to return it but when set up correctly is truly a high quality audio woofer. Im truly impressed.

I remember my buddy back in HS in the 90's had a 12 inch JL audio sub in a small sealed box. We never heard of them back then as I assume they were new company but they were common enough in my area but for some reason RF was the more sought after brand here. Anyway, he had it powered by a Punch 200ix. Sounded real good but didn't have the impact he was looking for and he soon replaced them.

I have a W6v2 sub that is just sitting in my garage collecting dust. I suppose there is a reason for that. Everyone likes a little performance to go along with the SQ I guess. Perhaps using one of their high output boxes would help.

Yeah, Punch amps were also the king back in those days. For some reason I recall Kicker being part of another company with the word water in it. I get what your saying about the performance on the JL but to this day and out of my many sound set ups I dont think Ive ever heard such a clean, accurate bass and the out put is there once it is tuned correctly. I also think one can confuse the rumble of bass as performance like I once did but here is a difference. I dont get a rumble anymore...I get all bass now. BTW, I had a set of punch woofers 12''s in the 90s that had double magnets they called them and those things were in a custom box...rocked the heck out of my little hatchback, they were powered by a coustic amp and I dont even know if coustic is still in business but what an amp. Small but powerful! Ill see if I could find one online and I will post pic.

wasnt hard to find here it is:

Stillwater designs has the kicker brand. Not really too happy with kicker these days, they use designs and materials more suitable for high production and ship products to over 50 countries, which is probably the better business decision. Maybe others here have a different view of them but for the space they require and the price to performance ratio just isn't too efficient.

I didn't really care too much for their subs back in the day, nor did I with Orion's. Back then I was more into MTX's Blue Thunder line of subs or Cerwin Vega's.

Yeah, my buddy had Orion and they rocked and so did the amps, MTX was big, and I had 2 x 10'' by cerwin vega they sounded pretty good. Another big name back then was PYLE. I even had 2 super pro plus 10'' woofers made by pyramid and believe it or not they actually beat really nice. For some reason 15's were much more popular then than they are today too. I even knew a few guys that had 18's. Also, the equalizers that were attached under the radio as a separate unit were big i have one here made by sherwood. Rockford lost popularity once they went big with best buy and circuit city etc , their amps began to **** and then their woofers followed. I would still like to have some of that old stuff for some reason, lol. You sound like youre from the 90s, if so , do you remember when JVC was a big name? How about Blaupunkt?

speaking of 15'' I searched old school rf and this came up:

I had an old Rockford Punch 1500 last year but it wasn't putting out the wattage that it claimed so I sold it to a friend for dirt cheap and it later died on him. It was a beast and worth some serious money if it still worked.

Kinda like when I tell me people I have a SoundQubed sub woofer and their reply is "What the **** what ****** brand is that?"

Then I blow them away :p.

Yeah I was in highschool in the early 90's. I also had a Rockford amp that disappointed me, it was the 600.1bd. From 2006 model I think. Just didn't perform but the birth sheet said it put out over 700 watts so not sure what was up. Sold it to a friend and he wasn't impressed, he then got a Slash 1000 watt amp and was happy so I think RF had some issues there for a while. Their new lineup's look good to me though.

Kinda like when I tell me people I have a SoundQubed sub woofer and their reply is "What the **** what ****** brand is that?"

Is that a newer company? I'm just now getting into Sundown, you guys move brands too quick for me. I noticed that trends change here in these car audio type forums. Everyone raves about brand *x* for a couple years then it's on to something else. Why I'm not sure since the laws of physics will only make audio so good anyway. A few years ago Audiopipe and Fi was praised about and purchased by some here, now it's like they didn't exist lol. I think that's what happened to the old audio companies....the once well respected brands like Kicker, Orion..etc didn't betray the enthusiast crowd rather it's the enthusiast crowd that betrayed them, forcing them to either eat Ramen noodles or sell out to Walmart quality in mass.

Mark my words, Sundown audio, Fi, DD..etc will be next. The enthusiasts will move to other brands and 10 years later will say their products are junk but were once great. Too many audio companies anyway. Or maybe I'm just looking at it all wrong.
