faint popping sound coming from e15a when playing

I recently purchased another e15a from a friend, so now I am running 2 15a's in a 4.4 cube ported box @ 30 hz (2 of the 2.2 reccomended ported boxes side by side). These subs are only recieving ~ 550 watts RMS each for the time being.

The one I just bought has a faint popping sound coming from it when short, hard bass hits. you kind of have to have you head right next to it to hear it. Also, when long smooth bass lines are played, it kind of sounds like how a sub sounds when you lightly put you finger on it when its hitting, but not as severe.

You can not hear either of these things very well from the front seat, probably because the other 15a drowns them out. The other one plays fine by the way.

Well, is my sub blown? Or will it be blown soon after some more playing time?

I can try to return it, or send it back to ED.

Any thoughts are apprecated. Thanks

In a way, it sound more like a "pop" when very short bass lines hit, like a kick drum or something. I heard one of my my friends blown sub and know the clanking sound you are talking about. It is like this but not nearly as loud or extreme. Like I said you can barely hear it from the drivers seat.

try checking the tinsel leads. My sub made a weird rattle after it hits. I took it out and found out that when the sub went in, it kept hitting the tinsel leads because its too long and it bends towards the cone. Try anything to make the tinsel leads stay away from the cone. hope this helps

I was thinking the same thing snova, but I pulled the sub out and It did not appear to be coming apart. Could it be doing it anyway without me being able to tell?

Anyone have any ideas?

Alright Ill try that tommorow.

It is really weird though, on the way home tonight I was playing it at a decently loud volume, and it did not sound half bad. It's only when you stick your ear up to the sub.

I don't know if it is sounding decent just because the other 15a is drowning out the bad sounds or what.

Ok, this is what you do.
Pop the sub out. Wire it up in series and run it free air on your amp. Run tones on it, see if you can pinpoint the sound to the woofer.
^ agreed. If its not the sub, it could have been an air leak around the sub mounting plate thing.

Thanks guys, hopefully this is the case, but the sound does appear to be coming from the center of the sub.

The popping gets louder as the volume gets louder.

Keep in mind I just got this all in today. I first had it running off 2 channels on the amp, and it was not really any louder than it was with just 1 sub. The noise from the newer sub was not there either.

I later bridged the amp, which made it twice as loud, and sometime today after bridging it the noise started. I can't tell you if the sub was making the noise at first, before bridging because I wasnt listning for it, and quite frankly didn't notice it until a friend was in the backseat and pointed it out to me.

I don't think the sub is blown, but may be on its way out...?

Well I pulled the sub out and ran it by itself free air with some tones, and it is definately the sub making the noise.

I suppose I will call ED in the morning. I just hope they dont send me an AE, and I end up with two different subs. Hopefully I can work something out with them so that doesn't occur.
