My son has a 2002 Honda Accord 2 Door that came stock with a factory 6 speaker system. For his 17th birthday I'm purchasing front and back speakers with installation. I'm not yet willing to let him have an amp and subwoofer but I know he'll want to do those upgrades in a few years and I'm willing to spend a little money to get better than a basic system but not enough for an audiophile class system. He recently bought a Pioneer AVH-X1600DVD head unit with the money he made working last summer.
Between him and I we decided on Pioneer TS-A6995RS for the rear but are undecided on TS-A1685R full range coaxial or TS-A1605C component speakers for the front. The components will cost slightly more to install but not too big of a deal.
Anyway, I wondered about what to do about the existing tweeters from the factory speakers if I chose the coaxials. When I talked to the installer, he suggested that I purchase the coaxial instead of the components and hook them up to the existing external crossovers thus continuing to use the factory tweeters. He said he just did this with his girlfriend's car and while there is some doubling of top range frequencies it sounds great.
Does this make sense and is it a good idea? What kind of shape would you expect the factory tweeters and crossovers to be in? He said that tweeters are more durable and don't tend to blow like coaxial so they should be in good shape? Do you agree?
I'm new at this but have been doing some research. Any advice would be appreciated.
