I'm not arguing whether or not they could prove it or if you can get caught. I am just letting you know it is illegal because you seemed confused on that aspect.
If you make a backup and then sell the original copy you are suppose to destroy the backup. They would probably tell you that if you were irresponsible enough to lose the original you should have bought another or destroy your backup since you no longer owned an original copy.

Anyway you twist it you aren't suppose to have any form of backup copy unless you are in possession of the original copy.

Oh I know. I wasn't trying to argue with you either. I really didn't know it was illegal to be honest. I will however, continue to do what I do. In all honesty I do use backups in my vehicle to prevent damage to my originals or if my CD case is stolen at a competition I won't be out much for it.

im guessing the reason why people dont use it more is because the interface to it is so un-friendly and hard to learn...it isnt "point and click" downloading of wArez

I also carry back-ups in my vehicle... I haven't had originals in there in years. Not only do they get scratched up, even in the case, but they could easily be stolen. Actually... when I totally my car a few years ago my CD case was jammed full of broken glass bits which scratched 90% of the CDs in the case beyond the point where they could be read at all -- not sure how that worked, but it did... I had to re-copy my whole collection on to backups AGAIN. While it was a huge PITA... it's better than my multiple thousands of dollars in CDs being totalled and me buying new ones.

I have literally 300+ actual, paid to much for , CD's that I have made copies of for the purpose of preventing the originals from getting stolen out of my car. Is this actually illegal? I have DL'd songs before. If I liked them, I bought the CD. I have stacks here to prove it. Does that matter? The reason I don't DL more songs is the terrible quality. I have spent way too much trying to get good musical reproduction in my car to have it dumbed down with copied, low quality music.

I would like to make "mix cd's" for personal use from my collection though. Is there a good ripping program someone could suggest. Or is that illegal too?

This was on IRC. The FBI had setup dummy FTP sites and tracked down the couriers to the release groups that they were working for. That is when a bunch of the big producers for various movie/warez groups were arrested in something like 9 different countries.

Not illegal. You are allowed to create duplicates of material you own. You are just not allowed to sell them or use the copies for personal monetary gain.
