If a person is to make a box, but the port is outside he box, how do you factor all that in?

u only factor how much of the port is inside the box

u just don't remove the port displacement from the volume of the box.

So in other words, the port on the outside of the box does not alter the performance of the woofer... as long as it is the correct size inside the box?

You could have a box in your trunk and run the port up to your head if you wanted to. The ports do not have to be in the box.

It *should* be on the same plane though, helps with cancellation.

not just the correct size INSIDE the box. the entire length of the tube must be the correct size. not like you can put the right port in the box then extend it and expect to get the same tuning.
