the issue:

USB relies on internal decoder to decode music.

any mp3 player(except ipod) that you plug into the head unit via usb will be handled as a thumb drive.

it reads the data and decodes it on he unit and then processes and plays it.

in case of ipod i belive because it is protected audio format, the ipod acts as a decoder.

it removes protection and decodes a compressed audio to PCM wav format and sends it to the unit for processing. and playing.

the problem is.

head unit has a limited decoding abilities,(mp3,aac,wma)

MP3 players on the other hand have alot better support for playing various codecs.

but theres no way to use the audio player's built in decoder similar to ipod and send the pcm wav data to head unit.

any software engineers that hang out here on this board?

which side needs to do the work?

is it lack of software on the headunit to be able to use the mp3 player

or is it the MP3 player that has to have the software for direct connection to head unit?

or both?

****. do you guys even have a clue what i was talking about?

i thought i put it in simplest words already.

but ill try again.

ipod decodes music natively and sents a wav file to the head unit.

other mp3 players act as a storage device and dont do any decoding.

what needs to happen for other mp3 players to decode the music nativley and send the wav data to head unit?

that way we get more codec support from car audio
