Excursion

Hey guys I'm new to car audio so don't kill me if this is a stupid question...

I was watching some woofer videos and I was seeing some awesome excursion and its so cool especially the hair trick with the Avalanche 15's. but I wanted to know is excursion just related to spl or is it good for sq and sql? it just seems like when you see the best excursion the quality goes down so I wondered if spl is all about excursion

and by the way.. can you get good quality out of avalanches??? Thanks

excursion is the movement of the sub back and forth

and are you kidding me? avalanches are notorious for their sq. im ordering mine tomro

I knew what the definition was. it just seemed like the woofers that get the most are really really loud but the quality wasn't there
That's probally because it the video was recorded with a camera and cameras aren't the best at picking up subbass fequencies in great detail..

No, excursion is not related solely to SPL. The CV Stroker had very minimal excursion and those were used in some extremely loud set-ups.

The thing iwht excursion is, if the driver can do it while mantaining sufficient Bl, then the woofer should be more accurate at loud(er) listening volumes.

The Stroker still amazes me for some reason. I always think to myself, "How can something that moves so little get so damn loud?".
Because Strokers are designed to burp at or near tuning in a vented setup where cone excursion is minimal, but box efficiency is maximized. Try using a stroker for daily music listening, lack-luster at best. This is not to take away from strokers or say you cant get one to work decently daily, but that's simply not their design intent, nor does that show excursion is meaningless to output. Sealed systems for example rely solely on cone area and cone excursion to determine output (where as vented systems also have the enclosure efficiency to add to output). Excursion becomes a big issue in SPL with sealed systems. And before you say it (SPL and sealed systems dont go together), not everyone is building an SPL rig that will be burped at tuning. Someone wanting a sealed system with big output should definitely look for a sub with alot of excursion.

Even in vented systems, when deviating further and further from tuning (ie: listening to music, not just single note burps), excursion becomes more and more of an issue.

Strokers are a good example of how excursion isn't everything in determining output (for vented systems), but they certainly do not show that excursion is meaningless to output.

As to if excursion affects "SQ", yes it does. Two subs, one with greater excursion than the other, the one woth more excursion will be working proportionally less to acheive the same output. In other words, two subs moving 10mm (which will be equal output.. assuming same cone displacement here for simplicity), one has 20mm xmax, the other has 30mm xmax, the one with 20mm xmax will be working at 50% of its maximum while the 30mm sub will only be working at 30% capacity. 30% versus 50% equals less stress on the sub obviously. This does not mean all subs with greater excursion will inherantly be cleaner, as many other factors are involved (motor topology, etc), but its certainly an advantage.

Also, more excursion means more displacement potential which generally equals more low end output, as it takes more and more displacement for lower and lower notes to play at the same output. Some would consider this better "SQ" in the subjective sense.

It has been explained numerous times, no need to sticky it, just search //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Frankly I don't think audioholic came up with that. I bet he just searched, then copy 'n pasted //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Cheating bastard.

We mods are so incompetent that, unless members like you tell us what and what not to stick, we wouldn't have a clue of what to stick ... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif
I've seen those tit-tays before.....JMAC!!!! you're cheating!!! and you're back to posting! Glad to see that, we can't loose you and lemans, its just toooooo quiet
