Ever get the feeling like it's kinda shady?

I got kicked out of an audio shop when i was 18.. I went in to a lil shop to browse and just get a feel for their prices.. all they had was power acoustic, entry level Fusion, Jensen.. and lower level kenwood subs and HU's... so dude is tryin to sell me their 800watt fusion package for $800..

and i tell him I already have a system.. he is askin what amp i have.. I tell him Memphis Mojo 2000D.. he goes "No, memphis dont make 2000 watt amps, and the Mojo is a sub" i Try to tell him the amp is a older model with the Flaming M logo and all that "Noo he says, they only make PR and Mclass amps" Whatever.. then he asks about my subs.. I tell Him 2 Resonant Engineering SX 12s.. He says I should get some high end subs for my Memphis amp.. he goes "i THINK YOU MIGHT LIKE THIS NEW BRAND WE'LL BE GETTING... ITS CALLED RE AUDIO!" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif I try and tell him i have RE Audio, resonant engineering.. he's like "No way, there arent even ant dealers in West TN" i go on and explain I got em online and for under $500 a set... He's like "yeah maybe the SR series.. yu would want a SE or MX or a higher line" I tell him i have SX 12s and he is arguing "No way, those sell for $400 EACH, and handle 1000w each, you must be thinkin about the SR series... by this time i get pissed and tell him he is a dumbass in front of his manager... we have words and he threats to call the cops.. Im screamin in the store that he is a fckin retard and all they sell is garbage as he dials on the phone:furious:

There's only one spot in my area that has a guy that actually cares about car audio. I could tell because he was actually suggesting I buy stuff that the store didn't sell and that he'd install it at a decent price. I need to call him up actually and tell him that the plans are on hold a bit.

Then a few days ago I check out the other store and the dude flocks to me, trying to sell me nothing but this one brand I can't remember. So I'd tell him what decks I'd like and he'd be looking them up quoting me the MSRP plus like $20. Quoted me (no shit) like $300 just for a low-line Clarion deck and installation.

I don't mind having sales folks trying to sell me - after all, it's their job. I do mind not being asked a few qualifying questions before the recommendations start coming. I can't ever remember being asked what system I had, what my expectations were, or what I was trying to improve. The only question that ever came about revolved around a budget. They might as well been selling washers and dryers.

cool story, bro.

but the topic of this thread is why i don't buy from shops anymore.

interweb shopping ftw

To be honest I don't see how many of the stereo shops are still around.Maybe a few of the really, good ones with people whom know what they are doing but those are few and far.

I remember many, many years agao I went to the local shop and bought a pair of the old Cerwin Vega orange con subs and one of them had the voice coil connection broken off where you connect the speaker wire. I brought the sub back that I had just paid $300.00 and told the guy he sold it to me this way and he said, I am sorry i must have grabed one of the old used ones by mistake.....WTF.......anyway he traded it out without a problem and off I went.

A few weeks later I stoped a friend of mine (small town everyone knows everyone) to show him the new subs I had and he showed me the same subs, he had just bought a pair of the vega's from the same shop, well you guessed it, one of his subs would not play and he had taken it out to look at it and low and behold, the guy at the stereo shop had soldered the **** voice coil that was broken off back on. If you moved it around the sub would start to play but it would stop when you stoped moving it. I told him the guy had sold me that same sub and told me it was used. The stereo shop had soldered the wire and sold the sub to him for the price of a new one. He had went back and they told him he had did that, it was a user error and the shop would not cover it, it was a new sub and they would do nothing for him. He lost $300.00 on it. I never went their again.

Because people are impatient. They'd rather be able to drive to the store and come home with equipment than do research and shop around. Even if it means spending more money or getting crap, there are plenty of people who just plain won't put the effort into it.

Plus some of those salesmen can be downright frightening to the uninitiated. Some slick salesman tells you that buying online is a crap shoot and maybe you'll save money online but the equipment might not work, and a lotta people are gonna believe it. I had a guy pull that one on me and was just amazed.

It's that kind of crap right there. If i was your friend I would have at least went back and busted out their store window or something. The other member was right, online shopping for the win. Like I said, they MIGHT get to make a little money off of me installing stuff, maybe. And even that will only be the headunit cause I hate screwing with all those wires and the aftermarket mounting kits and cans and the like.

Most audio shops don't carry the big stuff anyways. There is one here that I am looking at working for, that considered the RF T1 their best sub, and is on par with the L7 15"s. The guy there had some of the nicer of the CA equipment genre in his own car(not mainstream, but not the best), but there's no profit for larger unadvertised equipment in his shop (Read: DD, Sundown, AB, Fi(Possibly, though only through SMD dick riders, though he seems to be pretty determined that smd.com>CA.com), SI, AQ, Atomic, etc). His build consisted of 4 3518s(I was hoping for 9518s) running on a Diablo 8.1 walled with some 26 cubes tuned to...36Hz I think.

lol shop i went to kinda close.. took about 4 minutes before i even saw someone.. I walked in the front door and it was a tiny shop and no one to be seen.. I needed to pick up some reducers and just sat there.. the ****ed things were too big too!!

yes yes all forum guys are c a gods and shop ppl are just effin idiots

seriously??

some ppl get into and stay in bussiness because they love customizing vehicles sound/look/performance yes you can find it cheaper on e-gay and yes some guys are D B's but most of the population can not do it themselves

no not even with a harness and dashkit from wal-mart

i wont even get into speakers and subs

so no not every one can do it so there are some victims/oops i mean "customers" left for me

and i have seen some cars burnt down to the frame just cuz some one said "diy" i'll help

or have to spend $40 extra cuz they cut off factory harness and poped every interior fuse

so retail/mainstream brands do have a place and w/o some of their R&D some smaller car audio brands wouldn't be able to survive the early years Jl was started by two guys in a garage just like home computing how many of you can build your own computers??(rethorical question/don't chime in w/I can Ican ) point being most of you just are just CONSUMERS think about c a in those terms b-4 you start to bash how some of us eat
