Enclosure Size and port question??

Okay, so according to kickers website and manuals, the cvx's I have require 1.0-4.6^3 ft sealed. Why is that range so large? Will it have the same performance if put in a 1 ft sealed box vs a 4 ft sealed box? Sound differences?? Whats the deal?

Also, what are the main benefits of a ported enclosure? I am doing 2 seperate boxes, 1 for each sub for the best fit in my trunk so I can still save some space, so I'm just wondering if it's worth the time to port the enclosures or if I should just keep em sealed?

small enclosure will not sound as good as the large sealed enclosure. The large sealed enclosure should give great SQ while the small enclosure is for people trying to save space. Personally I like ported enclosures better so I'd say make a ported box, but that's just me. Is this for a 12" CVX?

main advantages of the ported box would be more than likely louder and if tuned properly a deeper sound

not to be negative on this reply but small sealed enclosures do sound good just you have to over power the woofer a bit. maybe you should look at all the SQ cars, especially the MB Quart Jetta, which has only 2.5 cubes for 3 10s.

the main difference in a small sealed enclosure is that you need more power to get the same effiency as a larger sealed enclosure. As for sound, smaller boxes are tighter in sound and larger boxes are boomy in sound.

the only reason why companies put such a broad range in enclosure size is b/c they create woofers that are okay for all application to sell more product and usually just for a few lines of products.

Yes, they are 12" cvxs and will be powered by a zx1500.1. so do you guys think im okay with a smaller sealed or should i go larger sealed, or should i port it. If ported, what should it be tuned to? I'm thinking around 2 cu ft. if ported? Manual says like 1.75-2.5 ish i believe. Also, do you count port area in enclosure volume? what about sub displacement?

Deep bass that will get loud but still have decent sq. I don't want full sq, but i don't want full spl either. Somewhere in the middle where its still loud but doesnt sound like crap!

for 2 12" CVX's and what you are wanting I would go with 5 cubes tuned to 34-35hz with 75-80 sq. inches of port

Okay, but what if I wanted to have 2 seperate boxes... 1 for each side of my trunk to save space through that layout? Will it sound worse? Same? I would then assume around 2-2.5 cubes per side with 40 sq in of port?

Also, do I need to subtract sub displacement from volume as well as port volume? Thanks

ya if you made 2 separate boxes they would sound great. just gotta make sure they are the same tuning and box size and you will be fine.

you want 2-2.5 cubes for each chamber. that is not taking into account port displacement and woofer displacement.
