Hah! Instead of spending millions trying to arrest people they should have lowered the price of downloads.
I own almost 700 CD's legally but I quit buying a decade ago because I got tired of buying CD's and getting crap for musical content. I was the type of person who would buy a CD even though I never heard it. I always searched for something new. Every week I would purchase a known artist and then pick up another from a group I never heard of. I quit buying because the price kept going up, and up. My weekly habit had almost doubled in cost.
Then a few years later I found Napster and I've been downloading ever since. And it didn't hurt their sales at all. Why? Because I never would have bought this stuff in the first place. I only d/l because it's there and it's free. I might listen to most of it once, and then it sits on my hard drive collecting dust. A very little percentage of it makes it to my iPod for constant playback and most of that are songs you never hear on the radio. B-sides and such.
I remember when they first started offering legal downloads. I was happy. This would relieve some of my guilt. But then I seen the prices. What a rip off. It costs almost the same to d/l a new, popular artist as it does to buy the CD but I can't get the artwork , I don't have a permanent shelf copy, and I can only play the song on the original PC. No dice, I'll keep d/l for free. If I choose to support a band I'll see them in concert.
