Eclipse cd5444 aux question

So I've tried searching the net this past week or so in hopes of finding a way I can hook my iPod into my old school cd5444. The head unit has 4 sets of line out; fixed out, rear/mid, non-fader/low, and front/hi. I had always assumed I'd need some sort of line in but when I plug my rca's into the fixed out and crank the volume to max I can actually hear my iPod playing, in a barely audible and slightly distorted type of way...does this make sense? And is there a way I can play it at normal volume if this is possible?
