well i ended up picking up 3 10" eclipse aluminums on creigslist mint mint condition paid 100 a sub, great deal, well today i nstalled them and i want impressed i drive a small vehical i belive it to be the enclosure but idn, well first off i ran then at 2.6 ohms off a jl 1000/1 everything great but the box i built is .6 per chamber with out displacement figure .4 cubes per sub, to small? and has anyone heard aluminums in a ported box thanks

its the box.. that sounds way too small for those subs. What is their model number? what series?

I would try .75-1.0 cubes each sub sealed. What you can try to do for the time being... add polyfill to your current box and it should help a little until you can change the box out.

The difference between sealed and ported is normally 3db so yeah there is quite a difference but the box has to be a good amount larger.

I hate it when people say ported boxes are outright 3dB louder than sealed, because it's total bullshit. The ONLY thing a ported box does output wise is increase output AT AND NEAR tuning. It does NOTHING outside of an octave or so beyond tuning.

As far as the issue at hand, the box is indeed probably too small. The eclipse alum 10s should have about 0.6-0.8cf after displacement. With a box that small I'd wager they're probably rather anemic sounding.

No, it's not total bullshit and you answered why with the rest of your post. When people say they're 3dB louder or that they're louder in general, they are being vague. They usually appear louder because of the gain around tuning and that's why people say this. Lack of output below 45hz makes the sub seem to not be very loud.

The ported box I put my assassin in was not specificaly designed for the sub, however it was WAY louder probably 3 times as loud as the sub in a sealed downfire. Box was likely tuned around 45-50 htz though with the assassin in it. The single Assassin was louder than my friends 2 JL W6's at it's tuned frequency, it's no BS it made my ears feel weird after listening to it for extended periods of time.

That said I still prefer it in a sealed box, the ported vibrated my truck like mad and I don't have a subsoice filter either so I decided to stop running it. I play a wide variety of music and to me sealed handles this better and is more musical. it also seems to hit lower than the ported box for obvious reasons.

Just be careful when playing them at full tilt. At the shop I used to work for I saw more than a couple voice coils that had been shot through the cones. Yes it was most likely user error but that is why I said be careful.

And yes I would put them in a larger enclosure.
