I ordered some Dynamat and will be starting my first sound deadening attempt next week. So if anyone has any tips with using Dynamat extreme or any other type deadener please give me some. Also what tools might I need to do the job. thanks.

Clean the area thoroughly with paint thinner/acetone....work with small pieces....take a heat gun/hair dryer to the piece before you lay it down....don't just stick the piece on at once, slowly remove a portion of the backing, stick that part down so it's smooth, remove another part of the backing and repeat.....work out all air bubbles....

I am also doing some sound deading soon. What i am trying to do to learn is do yahoo/google searches on pages that people list how they do it. Also manufacturers web pages can offer some good tips.

You don't really need to do the heat gun thing on dynamat xtreme. I got one of the bulk packs with a ton of that stuff and did my whole trunk and front doors with it. I didn't want to buy the official roller thing because it's expensive, so I went to a hobby store and bought a little wooden roller for a lot cheaper. The roller is definitely something you need so that you can press the tar side onto your surface and get all the air bubbles out. I recommend you just sit in your garage at night and get it all done in one sitting. Using smaller pieces can be alright, but if you can fit big pieces anywhere, it won't hurt and it will save you a lot of time. The metal part of the dynamat is really sharp when you tear it off, too, so you'll inevitably get a bunch of little scratches on your fingers.

What kind of car do you have? My '96 Nissan Sentra required a lot of dynamat on the trunk. I think it helps to weigh it down to reduce rattling as well as doing its normal thing. If you have any dynamat left over, don't be afraid to do multiple layers or fill in spots that aren't filled in...every bit of that shit helps.

I use the handle of a screwdriver/chisel to smooth out tight fitting areas. Hairdryers really go work miracles for making the stuff soft and supple too, but they sure do make your car feel like an oven //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I ordered Fat Mat extreme. Much cheaper than Dynamat, and close to being exactly the same product, IMHO. The hair dryer is a must ! The tar heats up and the material becomes much more flexable.

What I learned applying Fat Mat to an Astro Van -

1. The back of a screwdriver is needed for tight areas. Use a roller on larger areas.

2. Apply two layers where there are large gaps between metal surfaces.

3. If you don't have a hairdryer, lay the sheets out in direct sunlight and wait about an hour. Same effect as a hairdryer, just takes longer.

4. Use gloves when smothing out the edges of the Dyanmat. You will have cuts on your fingers, and a ton of scratches if you don't.

5. After appling the first layer, tap the outside sheet metal, if it sounds tinny and you can here a vibration, apply more material. My Astro took up to 3 layers in some of the open areas to eliminate the vibrations.

6. Once the material is applied, it's NOT coming off. Measure twice, cut once !

Hope this helps !

Yeah, a roller is a definate must to ensure the dynamat sticks to the metal. A heat gun makes things a lot easier (& Stickier). Dynamat uses a thin sheet of aluminium to reflect some sound waves so be careful as the edges are very sharp!

Definitely use a heat gun, it makes it much much better. They can be bought for less thn $25. Don't waste your time with a blow dryer, just get 4000 btu's on that stuff //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
