DSC4125 or DSC480?

I'll be honest and admit that I'm still very much a newb when it comes to most of this stuff. Even though I had a basic system (2 12" Type Rs with a Hifonics BX1505D) in a previous vehicle, I never set the gains on the amp, I just left it how it came out of the box. So I am cautious about overpowering the speakers I currently have with that BB175.4B.

I have heard you guys say it is always good to have headroom when it comes to power, so does that mean by setting the gains correctly I would be lowering the RMS wattage delivered to the speakers and retain the ability to deliver more wattage if I upgraded speakers down the road to something that could handle more? That's probably a very dumb question for you guys, but I am just trying to make sure I understand correctly and get as much knowledge as possible. I read plenty of threads on topics I don't understand, but electronics have always been something I fail to grasp in many areas.

As far as the sub choice goes, I'm definitely open to suggestions. The only reason I planned on using the Type S was because I have enjoyed the alpine subs and speakers I have had in the past. I'm not sure if I could fit a 12" sub under my rear seat without raising it. The mounting depth is the biggest issue, otherwise I would have just thrown another Type R in there. All the subs you guys have recommended look like they will fit though.

Having extra power will allow you to upgrade to more powerful speakers later on, but it's also beneficial because you won't be pushing the limits of your amplifier constantly. And yes, setting gains correctly will allow you to safely use an amplifier that has more power than you actually need.

You don't have to EXACTLY match your amplifier to the rms rating of your speakers.

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I do like the qualities of the BB175.4B, and that price is hard to beat, even for a refurb.

I spoke too soon about being able to put a 12" sub under the seat. I found a few pre fab enclosures on eBay that will hold a 12" without lifting the seat. I built my last box, but it was very simple compared to the under seat enclosures for my truck. Should I even fool with pre fabs or get a custom box made? I'm looking more for SQ than just being loud, so should I stick with the 10"? If that's too many sub questions just let me know and I will create a new thread in that section and leave this for amp discussion.

This is the enclosure I was considering. They also have the same enclosure covered with bedliner for $110, but carpet is fine for my needs.

NEW CAR AUDIO CHEVY CK EXT CAB 88-98 12" CUSTOM SUB BOX - eBay (item 310224996629 end time Jul-05-10 17:19:09 PDT)

I was planning on just running a single sub since running duals under the rear seat means losing the jack box (which includes cutting the stud for the jack from the body, so there's no going back). I doubt I really need 2 subs for what I'm looking for.

That would be false. The BB175.4 was shown to be vastly OVERrated in another thread. The only person who kept insisting it put out rated was Tspence, who has since been banned for his bullshittery. Hell, not even planet audio could figure out if their amps were class-D or class-A/B; they just kept going in circles when they were asked a simple question.

Go with the 4125. Don't worry about overpowering, you've been told this several times. The ratings mainstream speaker manufacturers put on their speakers is usually when the speaker is being used full range. When you tack on a highpass filter, most midbasses can handle much more than what they're "rated" at. It's more of a blanket statement than anything.

where is this thread located at and when i called planet audio they said class a/b the techs ????? and thats a valid birthsheet, and i have had good luck with them, there are a couple of threads on here who have bought them, but either way the mb is also an amazing amp for the price, but i would def get that pg rsd over the type s anyday

You guys have already convinced me to go with the RSD12. I talked to one of the local car audio shops that I have dealt with before and they are going to build my enclosure for $75. I'm still undecided on the amp, but it's between the 4125 and the BB174.4B. I'd like to see the link that shows the BB175 is over rated, if possible.

I appreciate all of yall's help and patience.

I'll try to find it, but it's buried pretty deep on DIYMA.
