I just got up to college and i am trying to get some stuff downloaded. Mainly music. Well when i was hat home i was able to download with bittorrents and it has worked fine fore the past year for me. But then as soon as i get here it will not work. I have also tried dl through limewire just to make sure i just couldn't use bittorrents. So the only thing i can conclude is that they have the ports blocked. So is there any way to get around this or does anyone know of any program that maybe uses port 80.

The only way I can think of donig such a thing would be to setup a proxy from your home computer. Even then, it's not guaranteed to work. Pretty much, they block ports for a reason.

To be honest, it's more trouble than it's worth. Your best bet is to just use a client like DC++ and find a hub on the campus. Either that or use some sort of client where you can use a passive mode.

If you get caught trying to circumvent your school's firewall, you can get into some serious trouble. Just deal with the rules that have been placed or simply try and talk to an IT.

.
can you explain that a little more. Like what is DC++ and such or a client in passive mode?

DC++ is another p2p cleint. It allows such transfers in passive mode so you do not need to forward ports. Often times at colleges, someone has a hub setup so you can get uber fast speeds on the school's network.

I'm sure there are other p2p programs that allow these types of transfers. Also, you have 2 different types of transfers: Active and Passive. Active is when the ports are open and require you to configure your firewall. Passive connections can be made if the person you are connecting to is an active user. 2 passive users cannot connect simply because they are both firewalled.

So something like that would be your best bet if you want to download anything. I haven't used to many other p2p clients since I'm primarily a usenet subscriber. But since I do help run a DC++ hub, I know it's capabilities. It's worth it to give it a shot and scan your network for hubs.

you wouldn't happen to have a link to download this program.

BTW, thanks for the help i will give it a try and see what happens and let you guys all know.

Also, would you be able to tell me how to scan for DC++ hub.

thanks

I never did actually scan for hubs... I lounge around in 1 private DC hub that I help maintain, but occasionally make an appearance in the SomethingAwful DC hub. I do know that there is a huge public list that you can download from. Just be sure that you share too.
