Does the mike matter?

I now have a laptop and would like to do a analysis of my stereo. (stock as of now, but I wanna play)Does it matter what kind of mike I use? Will a generic mike from an electronics store work? I have a couple of programs on my laptop that has an analyzer on it. I know it wont be very accurate but, just to play.....
