does it really damage amps mounting them to boxes

if your box vibrates enough to damage an amp, you've got problems.

I can balance an house of cards on my box and burp at full volume and the cards will stay put.

I do 165 dB in the box, no flex at all. Yours should be like that.

i heard that the higher end amplifiers will most likely not get damaged, cheaper ones on the other hand might, easily. but i would avoid mounted to box if possible
it has nothing to do with the quality of amplifier. It is a very bad idea. Period.

Chris (dB-r) if your around I hope you will pipe in.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

this is just one of those car audio questions that has been around since well as long as i can remember. I dont do it and some people do it... Do what you feel is right. I just feel better not taking my chances. While i understand that in the same space they will get vibrations etc... I would just rather it not be on my box. Specially since it makes a nice easy *** in one package for the crooks to take...

thank you... btw what about mirrors falling off and the like... this leads me to beleive that the whole friggin car vibrates... or maybe i'm just a dumbass...

I had to go back to tapes cause my amps skipped so much mounted to my box.
i have a mariachi band in my truck, because my amps literally fell through the floor while screwed to the box. now i lost all my tapes and cd's, as they were being played in my amp when it vibrated through the floor.

BS, film it, then ill believe it.

your not dumb at all.

ever notice that different spots vibrate more or less violent in the car?

each car builds pressure and flexes differently.

my dash vibrates like crazy and I do 153s on the windshield.

My back seat area doesnt vibrate at all and I measure high 138s back there. Thats where my amp is mounted.

My box is in the rear cargo area.

I put my termlab sensor on the front of my baffle next to my subs, and I do about 142, with almost no sympathetic vibration on the baffle, just the air.

I can do 154dB on the back hatch glass.

The point is, your box shouldnt flex, and if you are worried about the actual SPL vibrating the amp, your SPL would be alot lower right on the box as compared to say the ceiling or dash.

my last box, i didnt even think about it at the time, i left a quarter on top of my box full volume for a week while i was driving around town between school and whatnot.

went to look at the wiring to check a few things over, low and behold, quarter was still sitting on the top of the box where i left it.

there should be NO flex in a properly built box.

I have 2 amps that Chris is fixing right now from this exact thing. If you have $ to spend, go ahead, it will work for a while, but it will also shorten the life of the amp.
i do believe you so don't get me wrong here, but are you absolutely positive it wasn't a slight impurity in the solder used? or a lack of solder or adhesive? also where will you mount your amps now to relieve the vibration issue?

yes, over time the vibration and any flex from the box loosens up the solder on the board and shit can fall off. Seen it plenty o times
... this statement starts out with a profound misunderstanding of physics and ends with you just making an *** of yourself.

Get a silicone board, solder something onto it. Shake it rambunctiously... If you know how to solder... shaking it won't do anything.

You also have to remember... if you make a wave, anything on that wave will be disturbed less when frequencies (ZOMG, hertz?) are lower, and will be more disturbed when frequencies are high.

Subs perform from ~10-~110 Hz... your car rattles upwards of 1K Hz.... Hard mounting it to your frame will be the same as mounting it to a box.

Not to mention if your box is flexing, you did it wrong.

The best way to mount any amp is to use rubber grommets under the amp to reduce the effect of ANY vibration. From either the sub, or car.

My cheap *** Boss amp has been mounted to the back of my sub box (with rubber grommets) for more than a year, and it still works perfectly.
