Do I need to brace 1" wood?

I would, but there are many things that decide on bracing. Such as how it is built, build quality, and over all design/application.

Bracing>wood thickness

Depending on a few things, for the most part I'd rather use .75" and bracing than 1" and no bracing. Depends, but if you do 1" and bracing, you would be well off.

if you have to ask that means its questionable. if its questionable wouldnt you rather go the extra mile then be short a mile when your box blows apart?
