Do companies lie about the watts RMS their HUs put out?

I'm looking for the highest powered HU you can get, and I'm really hoping for HD radio.

I saw the Kenwood KDC-HD548U says it puts out 22 watts RMS, but I don't know if I should go by manufactured rated specifications.

why not just get a small 4 chan to run your fronts and rears?

No, most of them don't lie. The question more or less is how cleanly it does that power. It's also worth noting that you won't hear a difference in +/- 5 watts anyways. A small 4 channel to run your speakers would be ideal, but this is going to add in extra costs/work.

its not that companies lie about the ratings, its that they dont tell you the important differences between peak and RMS

If you want a higher powered internal amp look at the JVC KD-AR8500, Alpine V-Drive head units, or an Alpine HU with the KTP445 power pack.

Would having 50 watts RMS be that much of a difference than 22 watts RMS if I'm not going that loud?

I would go with the alpine deck and the power pack. Should sound very good for what u want.

I agree, that alpine power pack is pretty much plug and play iirc, a 5yr old could install it

It is plug and play. The only thing you do is use the switch to select low or high gains.
