i went to go pick up a DMM from radioshack and there were different types that cover different ranges..... the diff ranges were 15, 18,22,29, and 42, and one was a bit higher....they got more expensive as the amount of ranges went up?....which one do i need can i settle for the 8 or do i have to get the 42?....or is there one in between that works best?

the most basic 15 range should work fine for what you are looking for. I assume the model 22-810 is the one that you were looking at. It will measure up to 500v ac and dc.
