Djing software

another basic freeware program I found is "OZ Audio" ... but if you already have Virtual DJ, I would use that instead...OZ is more for beginners. Another fun program I have played with is ICECAST. It will assist you in making pod-casts, live broadcasts, etc. (show the haters your skillz! LOL)

It's a shame you talk out of your *** so much. Perhaps you should research posting in threads where you can either add something usefull or something that is funny.

Am I really talking out of my *** when I say that using CD players and a mixer can give you better results?

Don't be upset because people are pointing out the fact that thats not DJing. You could easily be replaced with stored cue points and a playlist. DJ software FTL.

All a DJ does is play music. There are no requirements other than being able to hit a play button.

That being said, if I showed up to a show with this...

I'd definitely get clowned on.

Anyone can be a DJ...even the rich frat kids who buy numark equipment because it has flashy lights which appeal to idiot college girls. It's all relative to your crowd. If your crowd is a wedding party, point-and-click computer programs are sufficient...if your crowd is a bunch of hip hop heads...you better bring the rukus.

As for me, I use Serato, people don't hate on that because it still requires knowledge of vinyl to use it properly. Anything else, is, well...just a way to appeal to the mainstream "coolness" associated with being a "DJ"

i have turntables at home, but im using what the club has here.... because thats what i have to work with. I'll buy more of my own stuff when i feel i have learned enough about music theory and djing to justify the cost. Until then im using what im provided. Because i can learn the basics and it is of course.... free. With that said i would personally much rather be using a couple turntables, but this is what i've been given to work with.

oh, and djforums.com ftw. any other good resources?

Well, like I said, its all relative to your audience. I've djed at clubs and played straight off my laptop before and had no problems. Actually, this thanksgiving I'll be dropping mp3's with q-burns abstract message (look him up hes sick) funk style...so theres really no need for actual vinyl...ill more than likely be on cdj's / laptop. I'm sure people will enjoy it just the same as people enjoy top-40 djs playing off of a playlist.

I'm not trying to put anyone down, I'm all for people enjoying music any way they can or want to... I'm just more or less saying don't call yourself a hip hop dj if you've never chopped up a record, a drum and bass dj if you cant mix, or a trance dj if youre not gay. lol j/k Its all relative, and honestly, I don't care. If you have people shaking their *** on a dancefloor it doesn't matter where the sound is coming from.

About djforums, 'eh...its allright. I used to do a radio show on a websation they had years ago. I think it was called getswerve radio or something silly like that.

Id point you in the right direction for more info, but unfortunately I don't get on forums too much. I rarely check...

thats about it, unless you have direct questions which id be more than happy to help you with.

Its nice talking to someone who has the experience, so thank you. Right now my main difficulties are finding music to play as i dont really listen to club music at all, and dont watch tv or listen to the radio. The club im working at is full of people who love pop and want to hear whats "hot" which is an incredibly relative term. As well, going from genre to genre, like going from hiphop to rock. It's just confusing, i want to make it sound smooth but im not sure how. Matching the beats just isn't enough right now. Any advice?

Do you have a Email and/or AIM s/n i can reach you at?

Seriously, just trying to help right now... If you want to make smooth transitions you have to know your tracks.

Its not too great of an idea mixing a slower hip hop track into a much faster rock track. If the two tracks you are working with have similar BPMs, then what you want to do for a smooth mix is a blend. If the two tracks have a completely different sound, you might be better off with a quick cut. The key is to be creative and practice, no one is going to be able to tell you how to make smooth mixes. You simply have to try things with your music and see what works.

From my experience, DJs who play the type of stuff you do mostly do quick cuts with some cheesy special effects. They barely ever beatmatch.

Thank you for the advise. I try and beatmatch as much as i can. And yes the music i play is very gay... its a shame i have to learn it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

You should beatmatch as much as you can, but that doesnt exactly mean you have to mix ever single track together. Sometimes I just let one track build up and i drop a new one in on the break...same tempo, no clashing soundwaves. If you can mix tracks and it sounds good, go for it.

As for tracks that are opposite tempos, I do this:

Play a few upbeat *** shaking tracks, if people are still dancing, keep it up...if not fade into something slow like a r&b jam. Play maybe 2 of those depending on the crowd response and let the song fade out, say something stupid on the mic, and then drop your faster tempo track and switch gears.

the answer to your problem for finding the hottest newest music that a lot of people do not have you need to go to thesourceformusic.com you have to be a dj in order to buy anything from there but belive me the remix services that they have are well worth the money.

i find that when i dj the key to making everyone happy is that you just keep people dancing, cuz someone can come up and ask you to play a song that may be on the radio a lot but is not a song you can dance to. thats were you turn to a remix of it that is sped up a little bit so everyone knows the words and can still keep dancing.

the only song that i can think of off the top of my head like that is the song whats left of me by nick lachey, it is a slow song, but i have a subscrition to tm century and they have a cd that i get that has a little bit of everything on it and there is a perfect remix of the song that you can actually dance to.

and the only way you can get better at beat matching is if you do it, and you do it often, knowing your music definatly does help too.

a couple places you can get monthly or weekly cds of the hottest songs are promo only, tm century, and the source for music. those are the ones i use
