DIY dorm speakers, need suggestions.

Thats a big 10-4 on the Dayton RS MTMs. Any comment on what sive mids i should use, 7" or 6"? Again, im going to be running a sub, so they dont need to play the really low frequencies.

Build your own subs and run stereo bass //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif If its just music a couple of 8s ported in each corner would be SWEET...
BTW I would just use whatever the design specifies, however if you DO have the choice, I would just go with the 7s so long as you have a healthy tweeter, a lower F3 never goes amiss, makes integration with the sub much better/easier //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Again, this is a dorm setup, so i only have room for one box, and its going to have to be tall and have a small footprint, still ported though. I'll probably just go with whatever is cheaper at the time.

Now on to crossovers....

What makes the crossover design that is suggested with the Dayton MTM setup different from, say Dayton's prebuilt ones? I know the crossover point is more specific to the drivers, but what else do they do. (I'm a noob when it comes to crossovers).

You said it yourself, the crossover designs are specifically tailored to the drivers used, I would spend the cash and time to build them yourself rather than spending it on pre-built ones which may give you mediocre results //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
BTW for sub, consider a tapered TL, You can make it tall with a small footprint and just a single fold...plus its a little more efficient than a bass reflex so it will save you on the amplifier...Or maybe a ported sonotube, or a TL if you have the height...

Yes, i do plan on building my own crossovers, just to get the experience, but how are they specific to the drivers? I know the frequency point, and cutoff slope, but what else? I read somewhere that by changing one of the crossover components, you can soften down/uncrease the tweeter or something like that. I guess i need to learn how a crossover works and what each component of it does.

Back to the tapered TL. I googled this because i personally have never heard of it before, and it looks interesting. Seems simple in design, like a regular ported bass reflex box. What are some benefits and downsides to it though? Does it require more volume than a bass reflex? Is the response smoother? increased efficiency?

Its not particularly easy to design, but if designed right they are usually flatter than a bass reflex but not much louder if not at all...they are more efficient because there is no real compression chamber (unless you add one), however this also means that the drivers run out of juice a little quicker than in their Bass reflex counterparts...
The main advantage is that if you know what you are doing, you can achieve the F3 that you want (within reason) and they usually sound better and are punchier than other enclosures...The volume totally depends on the driver and the amount of taper (because line length is proportional to taper), but usually they don't take that much more room...

One of the easiest ways is to buy a sonotube close to the drivers SD and set it to the length of the FS of the driver. This generally gives you a nasty peak in the 80hz region, but can be tamed with stuffing if its not too bad. I can help you with the design if you would like, After this coming Friday (finals). It will be tall if you go this route of course, but it won't be too bad once you stick it the corner, plus you can take full advantage of room gain bu loading it into a corner, and using both the bottom and the top...

Alright, I might hit you up in the next few weeks. I have dead week this week, and finals next week, so it will be after that. Any suggestions between which sub to get? Type R or Dayton RS?

Dayton RS all the way, I have finals this coming week so yeah //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I don't know what your winter break plans are, but I've got a bunch of projects that I'll be working on when I'm back in NC, if you want a listen I'm sure I can arrange something //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Yea, like building the biggest baddest BIB's around...

Got me hooked on full-range too. Although I've yet to go with the flea powered tube setups, I love my solid state raw power.

you have any pictures of what you're running?
If you wanna wait to buy everything, give me a week or two to get my camera back home and I shall give you a picture. Its a really cheap project, the drivers aren't the most detailed, but you can listen to them ALL DAY LONG which is awesome! They don't fatigue my ears at all so I can crank them (perfect for a dorm setup). Also you don't really NEED a subwoofer (Flat till 30-35hz), the footprint is about 13 inches by 10 inches IIRC, about 4 feet tall.
Uses two 8 inch pioneer full rangers, and 5 dollar dayton helper tweeters ran parallel with a 2uF cap ( 6db at around 10k I think). It really is a joy to listen to...total cost was around 130 with wood...

Edit: Heres the two vent version, mine is just a single vent with the driver mounted higher, its basicallt a BVR (big vent reflex) or a ported box with a flare //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Simple to build...
