Distortion in my system

During quiet songs (think an acoustic song for example) there is a faint sound of distortion in my audio system.

My power cable in ran down the center of the car so far away from any speaker cable.

It's not alternator whine.

What could it be? I am currently using a cheap head unit, which I had to buy a kit to hard wire some RCA inputs into the loom so I could use an Amp with it. Could this be the reason why I am getting this faint distortion?

Nope I don't have a shitty system, just an old head unit.

Using Alpine subs and amps, HQ wiring and a set of comps made by a UK company that you guys won't get in the US that are regarded as quite decent.

Distortion, best way I can describe it is as when you know on older non digital tv's when you put it on a channel where you can't get signal so all you get is a black and white speckled screen with a screeching sound, that but very faintly.

Sadly not yet as I don't have another one to test it with, however I am investing in a new HU for xmas so I will let you know how I will get on.
