Digital Designs sound opinion.

3500's can sound really good, but 9500's... not so much. There's a reason 9500's are so successful at SPL burping, and its not due to some tendency to produce a nice smooth freq response. Before you say it, yes the enclosure has a lot to do with this, but not everything. 9500's are built with massively stiff suspension, relatively large coil, etc. Its pretty clear its design strategy is power handling and sheer output. People who think a 9500 is a do-all sub that can pound out amazing SPL numbers AND still give a smooth creamy freq response are simply fooling themselves.

9500's are a very nice, highly successful design. But their design is goal oriented, and that goal was/is not SQ. But some DD nut huggers will never accept this reality.

DD subs I can honestly say are some of the worst sounding subs Ive ever heard. Quite possibly the worst tone ever.

Loud... But holy shit. Id probably rather have no bass in my car than sound like that.

Each series sounds a little different. 2500 series probably being the best sounding with best frequency response with the exception of the dedicated sq woofer they have.

I love how mine sounds. I was at a small comp a week ago where people had type-x's, MTX 9500's, a W7, and and L7 are the ones I remember off the top of my head and the W7 was the only one that sounded better to my ear.

IMO... once you get to the 9500 there are so many spiders stacked together that it starts to sound funny. I've owned around 8 of the 9500 series drivers over the years from D version to G version and they have a very distinct mechanical noise to them, especially if you are playing them free air - which I think is almost entirely due to the spiders.

Some people love them, though, and obviously DD is doing something right to enough people as they keep growing.

i tried to get full T/S params from DD, but they refused or didnt know. they then proceeded to tell the guy who purchased the sub that nobody he knows would know how to use the specs anyway. i just had to guess on volume and port tuning according to their range chart. i didnt know the resonant frequency of the guys car anyway to be able to build around it, but dd is top secret i guess. they just referred him to pwk whenever he'd ask a question.

Not surprising.

DD has always been hush hush about the specs for their drivers.
from their point of view, i think that they believe most people look at power handling and x-max without factoring in anything else, making published ratings useless in practice. they are taking my right to be an ignorant consumer away from me. bastards!!!!!!

It is quite ironic that they are suppose to be this top-end underground manufacturer that caters to hard core competitors, but their company policy is that their customers are ignorant.

Whatever floats their boat.

This is how I've always felt lol.
