Difference Between Oscilloscopes?

Just curious about the difference between two oscilloscopes i've come across on the web. Both are made by velleman.

The first is the one most frequently mentioned on these forums, which is for sale on parts express. I think the model number is "HPS5"

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=320-290

Price is $185.

The second one i've stumbled across is the HPS10, and more specifically, the HPS10SE. It appears to be a newer, better looking and better performing unit, AND the price is only $149.99!

http://www.allspectrum.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=29

I was just curious if anyone knows why the HPS10 is less expensive? Is the parts express page just old and the price hasn't been updated? Or are these two models completely unrelated?

Just curious if anyone knows which one is a newer, or better unit. I haven't been able to find anyone with an o-scope to borrow, and i'm pretty sure the shop just did a guess-job with my gains //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif And if i can get a BETTER unit and save some $$ at the same time, i don't see why not.

Anyone have experience with either unit? Is there something better than either of these units for the money, even? Thanks a lot!

Well, i ended up going with the hps10se, it's more sensitive, has the cool reverse lit screen, comes with the probe rather than having to get it seperate, and comes with a hard storage case.

It was a tossup between the hps10 and the hps10se, but the se comes with the case and the hps10 doesn't.

And just in case anyone else in interested, i'm pretty sure the hps5 IS an older, discontinued model. The hps10 is something like 20x more sensitive, and 2x as fast. And of course all differences i cited above.

Oh and for anyone interested, if you can do without the reverse lit screen, and the hard storage case, the non-special edition hps10 can be had for $125!!

The thing's way bigger than i thought (i finally found a pic of someone holding it for reference, so having a proper storage case is a nice thing to have.

Oh nice, how do you like it?

Have you tinkered with the rms/max power algorythms?

I can't wait, the piece of mind of knowing my speakers are recieving a FLAWLESS signal is worth the $150 alone. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Not to mention it's a toy!

Got my o-scope today, i haven't used it yet (trying to muster the motivation to go get 'aa' batteries from wally word) but i'm already impressed with the quality of the unit, the case, and the manual is awesome as well.

All Spectrum is a great company, too. I orignally paid for express mail to get it here for the weekend, but someone actually called me on the phone, and told me i could save $20 and ship it priority and still get it by the weekend. Def. one of the best online buying experiences i've had as of late (maybe i'm just expecting less after dealing with unauthorized audio stores for the last 5 months) but i'm definitely happy.

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif That is all.

i got the HPS10 from amazon, payed around $150 shipped, came with a free dmm, which is hella cool but the scope has a dmm built in

love the scope, its SO easy to use, wish i bought the one with a case and backlit screen.. o well

I tried them... idk how well they really work..

Well, i got to try the unit out about an hour ago.

Took me about 30 seconds to figure out how to switch the input to 'x10' and locate the 'auto' button, but i soon realized my sub amp was clipping like CRAZY! The shop had my bass boost up so high that even with the gain all the way down the signal was clipped!!!

I turned the bass boost completely off, and reset my gain with a 45hz 0db tone, and did the same for my 4-channel with a 100hz tone. My speakers area sounding WAY WAY better. Anyone who ever hears an installer say 'i've been doing this a long long time, trust me, i can hear distortion' don't take their word for it. In about a year, i would have two worthless type-x's, blown type-r's, and probably some electrical system damage if it weren't for my new partner in crime o-scope //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I miss the boomy bass of my ungodly clipped bass signal, but i gotta say, i feel better KNOWING now, and although i do miss the outrageous bass a bit, the sq out of the type-x's is AMAZING me the more i listen to it. I had to turn off the subwoofer output to see if the bass wasn't coming from my door speakers, the accuracy and sounstage is incredible!!

Needless to say, i'm pleased //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Anyone know how to use the HPS10 to measure rms power output?

There's no way this bxi2006d is putting out nearly 2000 watts now that the gains are correct. Either that or these type-x's are just ungodly power-hungry.

I need an O-scope but those are not sensitive enough. I need something like an old analog one so I can see a fraction of a milisecond....
actually these things are dead on

i scoped my front speakers, no amp, just deck

unhooked my front left speaker, hook the wires up to the scope and set my balance all the way to the left, so my RIGHT speaker wouldnt kill me when i turned up the deck

when the signal finally clipped, i heard a super high pitched sound come out of the RIGHT speaker BUT i could barely hear it, if i farted, i would miss it

turned it down, the sound went away, unhooked the scope, turn the vol back up, and i heard the high pitch sound from the RIGHT speaker again... at the same vol the scope showed clipping at
