Determining the tuning of a box

I recently blew a kicker L7 12". I am running an 850 watt (RMS) Rockford Fosgate X6 mono amp to one kicker in this ported box http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5776235745 The speaked may have been defective but I did not spend time tuning it and configuring the amp which also may have caused it. This time I am going to do it right. The guy I bought the box off did not mention what the box is tuned to and he wouldn't respond to my e-mails. I have heard that there is a way to determine what it is tuned to by the measurements of the box.

How can I find out what my box is tuned to?

there you go, thats what your raw box is tuned to, according to the dimensions you gave me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

i put the height of the port as the width, and vice versa, but that should not make one bit of difference b/c it still equals the same total port area. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/redface.gif.62fdbfe1a101588a808c4cff71bcb942.gif

here is a convo we are having.. anyone care to add to this?

I think I am pretty accurate in my words

JeezUP Hoezdown: awesome thanks so much

JeezUP Hoezdown: i have a couple other questions if you dont mind

bmpnblzrJL: sure

JeezUP Hoezdown: alright, i blew my l7 12" in 5 days and I was trying to go easy on it to break it in.

bmpnblzrJL: its because your box is tuned to 55hz

bmpnblzrJL: you have a burp box at best, not a street beating box

JeezUP Hoezdown: what do u mean by that?

JeezUP Hoezdown: it candle handle low frequencies?

bmpnblzrJL: basically the box ITSELF is tuned so high, that you run the risk of blowing the sub playing anything probably lower than 40hz if you dont set the subsonic filter on your amp accordingly (provided you have one)

yup, its easy, just bring over a cut sheet and they do the cuts for like 25 cents each. maybe 50 cents now. mark each sheet as it gets cut for ease of remembering, and then go home and start gluing and screwing

home depot just doesn't charge me for cuts, well i am in there every week...but i just bought myself a table saw //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif and those L7's have some potential...they can take the power as long as they are in the right box and gains are set accordingly...i found out the best size in my car (2001 ford escape). is about 3.5 cubes per sub before displacement. tunes it to about 43hz..not bad for daily driving.
