I have been wanting to hear about the USB for a while.

I do have a few questions about USB in particular.

1. What is the largest HD one could use? I guess you would have to get a power inverter for it?

2. How do you rip a CD so that it has the same quality as a CD. I assume this is what you mean by lossless and FLAC. What is a good program for this? How much megabytes is on a CD?

I'm just curious, because I already have an iPod, what method of input would deliver a better playback... USB or iPod?
Ok.. I'm a newb and will admit that freely upfront.. with humility if there's an expert that needs to correct my ignorant butt... so.. having said that.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

The thing I've read (meaning I'm not positive but fairly sure) is that iPods will only transfer an analog signal to the iPod connectors on these head units... That means it uses the iPods fair but not stellar internal DAC's and output stage preamp (which stinks)... Redwine Audio talks about the mods that can improve that on a side note.

With a digital only USB stick or drive... It's one thing out... 1's and 0's of pure digital into the head unit... Therefore the snazzy burr-browns and DSP SQ tuning setup of a good head unit is where the signal is processed ONLY.. Not in the drive source upfront.... Eliminates multiple D/A then A/D then D/A conversions.. ie better SQ (I would believe).

Some might say the difference is negligable... Then why bother with nice burr brown dac's anyway or nicer grade preamp stages that feed out from a head unit or processor? Simple... It's cleaner... it does infact sound SIGNIFICANTLY better... Reason the DRZ is still alive and kicking.. Thankfully.

If there was a way I could feed digital in multiple formats from a USB drive to the DRZ, I'd be happier than a pig in poop to save up for one at full boat retail. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

..... Additional.. I thought I read somewhere that an iPod can be configured to "Act" like an external USB hard drive... I don't know for sure about that though. Just a thought.

1. ... don't know... I'll guess probably the same or maybe a little better specs than the 775 had.. maybe 4 GB possibly?

2. ... good software?? dunno as well as I haven't been ripping from CD's for a while and I'm sure the names have changed as to what does a good job... "Lossless" means (to me.. and I could be wrong) uncompressed or without degradation or loss of digital information per time-frame.. In over-simplified terms, getting all the 1's and 0's from the CD possible over to stored files.

How many MB's per CD.. This I should know.. A typical CD-Rom is roughly just under 700 mb's of data but I don't remember if that's with or without the error correction algorithm.

Thought there was a great thread in here somewhere about portable drives that could probably answer these better.

Hmm, I did read that if you are using the AUX port for an MP3 player playback that you are using the DAC's in the mp3 player. However, if you are using an iPod that is connected via the sync port that the files are converted via the head units DAC's...

Lol true.
I think I wanna get a 800, and keep my 9887 just in case. I liked my 880, noise issues though.
I didn't have the issue with mine. It turns out my gl was caused by only completing a portion of the big 3. Once I grounded neg to alt case, it went away.

I am trying to determine if one could hardwire a portable hard drive and use it....also trying to determine if I can use the IP-BUS input on my xm radio adapter for this USB device.

So when the HELL is it being released for sale!?! I've emailed Pioneer several times inquiring and haven't heard back //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Not to mention, my product exchange is pending with them right now and I REALLY want the 800, but the guy taking care of me said he doesn't know when it's coming out and they like to settle complaints within 30 days, which is just not gonna happen if they try to replace my 6900UB with a HU that doesn't have USB input (880/980 that they offered //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif)

Anyone?
