dd subs

2 things to think about. 1) the search button and 2) DD is an SPL company some people seem to think that they can sound good but the only DD install's i've heard that were anything near good SQ, was having a stout mid up front playing down to like 40hz so all the sub did was play up to 63hz.

Ideally a sub shouldn't play higher than that anyway.

Just because most people do not have sufficient midbass drivers and rely on sub's to do something they should not is no indication of a sub's performance in the area it is suppose to operate (subbass, not midbass). There are many subs I consider very good sounding that I would not run without dedicated midbass (XXX's and W7's to name two).

sorry noob question and sorry bou hijacking the thread a little, but i was under the impression that w/ good midbass that i should set my amp xover at about 80hz and the midbass for everything over....any truth to any of that? or how far am i off?

It depends on what your midbass drivers are. I like to highpass my subs in the 55-75hz range, and set the midbass to what blends best.

And remember, properly setting xovers isn't just lining up points and slopes (subs up to 80hz, midbass from 80hz up, for example). Sometimes its best to actually have a gap in the xover points (or different slopes). The ideal xover locations (and slopes) is totally dependant on the specific situation (drivers used, install techniques, power available, etc).
