no need for a hot knife simply a sharp razor knife....all ive ever used and never have a problem with fray.
simply tightly wrap a small piece of tape around up to the edge of where i wish to cut and then use the razor and follow with a piece of heat shrink

I'll try a sharp razor blade tomorrow and see how that does to

gl wrap black tape then cut but if you need shrink wrap i have some in my fs thread
