custom trunk?

when I look at the custom installs on the gallery page alot of the times I see the custom things that fit the trunk perfectly and usually look plastic, and they look really nice with spots for your subs amps caps, etc. Where do you go to get something like that for your trunk?

Go find a reputable car audio shop, not the chain stores, to build you custom enclosures and amp racks for the trunk. That is if you do not want to take the time and effort, and money to figure it out yourself. I've been interested in doing this myself, but I'm wondering how well a fiberglass enclosure would turn out on the first try, I'm guessing not very well.

Oh, does anyone know how shapes are fiberglassed when you don't already have a mold? Do you simply have to construct a mold using whatever, or can you form the fiberglass by hand when it starts to stiffen?

usually you main shapes are made out of mdf, like your flat spots to hold amps etc...glass just adds the purtty ness....you can't shape glasslike clay....

maybee you could use like styraphome and shape the styraphome....i dont know just an idea.....

D

Actually styrofoam sounds like a good idea for moulding the curves. Maybe the styrofoam could be coated in some kinda glue o r paint so the resin doesn't eat at it?

don't use the white styrofoam crap. Go to walmart and get some of the green floral foam. They sell it in blocks of all shapes and sizes. The resin won't hurt it at all. Cut it or sand it to the shape you want. if you need it bigger use some hot glue and glue a couple of blocks together. Works like a charm. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

nope doesn't quite work that way. A mold is the way to go. You can use all kinds of stuff to make molds. You can even use cardboard covered with tape to make molds. As long as it's stiff enough for yo to put some pressure on your set. Just use some packing tape ( clear tape ) and a layer or two of car wax/ mold release so you will be able to pull your work off the mold. If you have large flat areas it's best to use mdf/ wood. It's alot easier than trying to get perfectly flat fiberglass. And the resin will stick REAL well to the mdf/wood. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
