Custom subwoofers basics info?

I personally don't care for them. You really never know what you are going to get. Yes they look really cool.

A lot of the good drivers have a lot of R&D so you are just saying F it when you rebuild it with random parts.

A lot of the good companies use the same motor from 10-18+ inch woofers.

It all depends. Some yea don't make any sense. But most of your "R&D" is in the motor, which in most cases is left stock in a custom sub.

I build subs all the time, most of the time I order soft parts that are the same or near the same as stock. Sometimes I decide to do something a little off the wall like with some mtx 9500 motors I just built up, they are pretty cool. I'll also say another thing;

A lot of speakers have weak points, like bad spiders, or weak *** coils, maybe **** surrounds, from the factory. I can address that when I recone a speaker for someone and make it last longer and work better.

I have yet to have a complaint from a sub I built. Never, ever. People usually love them

Most "companies" just tell the factory in China how what size and how much they're willing to pay per unit... that's about as much R&D that goes into 99% of the stuff out there. The factory in China just assembles whatever parts fit the design (price) goals of the "brand" who's name they're slapping on it.

I've also had very good results building subs. For the most part, the motor and coil are better than 90% of the dominant role in what you'll get for a final result (most of which IMO is the motor)... which almost never is actually altered.

For the most part, if the person building knows what they're doing and takes care in doing it, you can get much better results than OEM on a lot of stuff, particularly if you're really abusing things.

Certain things I wouldn't try to "upgrade" over OEM parts, but even take for example the TC 4hp motor. Depending on the softparts you can get Eclipse Ti Pro, LMS 5400, or Silver top TRF. All wildly different softparts on the same motor and all excellent for their intended purpose.

I've built plenty of subs with different parts that wound up working better than OEM.
