replacing stereo and speakers

hello, i recently purchased a 1988 dodge shadow shelby and it still has its original speakers and stereos. i do not know much about car electronics but i was wondering if there were certain steroes or speakers i had to get in order to replace the ones already in the car or if i could just go to an audio store or walmart and buy a new stereo and speakers and be fine with those.
