Maybe your dad turned it down then. My dad and uncles worked tons of holidays and Sundays in their history with GM.

My dad has recently been working overtime as well. My dad isn't a fair representative of a current GM worker though since he is in the EMD. EMD isn't GM anymore but still under the UAW.

My dad worked at Ford. I asked my uncle and he hired into GM in 1980, and he cannot recall when he worked a holiday or Sunday. Besides that, what company does not pay holiday pay? Hell Kmart for Christ sakes is going to pay me double time to work Thanksgiving

Again, that is completey consistent with the story the guy told me. They were coming in only because "oustiders" were working in the plant. It is not hard to imagine the union insisting on a provision in the contract that would require the company to have non union workers there, so as to potect union jobs. As a matter of fact, everything you have said makes the guy's story more credible.

What do you not understand? The plant is shutdown and the people who were with the outsiders were salaried Union stewards or foremans. They were not the hourly line workers.
