Pardon my ignorance, but Ive never used a crossover before so I have a few questions.

Are crossovers generally wired in before or after the amplifier?

and what are things to look for in purchasing a crossover as far as specs go? frequency range for one I would imagine, can someone tell me what the basic frequncy ranges are ?

Im thinking of getting a crossover to 1) Keep only low freqs going to the sub anp, and 2) to help keep high freqs from the midrange speakers.

Hmm...as far as specs go, all mfgs of crossovers are //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/suave.gif.858fc102f7646e678ee8af7e1fbc41d1.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif a little different from each other. One thing to look for is a steep slope. For example 24db/octave slope is pretty good. As far as where they are wired in.....well an "ACTIVE" or "electronic" crossovers are always before the amp. While a "PASSIVE" crossover is always after the amplifier. An example of a passive X-over is like the ones that come with a component speaker system.

A nice 2 way electronic crossover would work nice for what you are trying to do. As far as freq ranges are concerned, most crossovers are flexible enough where you can adjust exactly which frequencies you want going to your subs and which ones you want going to your mids and highs. Hope I helped and didn't confuse you more.

Thanks that helps. The only thing im sure of is the slope. 24db/octave is prety good, what woud be worse, higher or lower?
Higher the better.
