Could it be 4ohm?

I am in the process of installing a new head unit for my 1998 Lexus GS300. The headunit is the JVC KD-AVX2. A few weeks ago I took of one of the rear door panels to see how many ohms the speaker is, and it said 4ohm. Since that meant I could use the headunit to amp to power it I ordered the head unit (I will upgrade to a new four channel amp and componets in the next month or so)

so my question is...

yesterday I took the front door panel off and the speaker said 2ohm. But... it looks like the tweeter is wired into the speaker somehow. I don't know if there is a cross over or not.. the tweeter wires plug into the housing that the speaker is in. So could it be that the tweeter is wired in series (or is it parallel?) to the stock speaker making the stock speaker 2ohm? Or should I just get a DMM to test it out? Thanks!

There is likely no "crossover" as you would have like for a component set present but more likely simply a resistor that serves as a HP choke for the tweeter inline with the signal wire. It is most likely wired in parallel with the other driver with both the tweeter and the midwoofer being 2 Ohm drivers which makes a 4Ohm load wired parallel.
The safest best, however, would be to get a DMM out and check for yourself.

Does that mean that I could hook up the front speakers and still have the tweeters? With the DMM would I test how many ohms are at the tweeter or how many ohms are at the stock speaker. Thanks for the real quick reply

If I bought a really cheap four channel amp would that work for all of my stock speakers until I upgrade?

but I would much rather use the amp in the head unit for now.. grrrr

yeah, I assumed you werent thinking AT ALL, seeing as EVERYTHING you said was wrong //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif lol
My mind is centered on a young lady (who I will assume hasn't gotten out of bed yet) in Marleston. I really should proof what I type before I click the 'submit reply' button.

just spend the money on a half decent amp, you'll use it when you upgrade the cabin speakers anyway, don't be a tightass!!!
he has said repeatedly that he has no desire to upgrade the OEM speakers (though I haven't any idea why) so I think this suggestion is likely falling on deaf ears.

If the front tweeter and midwoofer are both 2 Ohm drivers connected in series then yes, the internal HU amp would be seeing a 4 Ohm load.

But without checking it for myself I have no way of knowing for certain if this is the case with your particular car.

No, there isn't. Get a DMM and check your shit, then you'll know. YOU NEED ONE ANYWAY. Then go buy a 4channel amp for 100$ and stop worrying about making your deck do something it wasn't designed for. Jeez, i've got some old 2ch punch amps i'd practically give you if it would stop you asking the same questions in 4 threads.

My head unit will be comming in on Monday.... I will get a DMM soon and maybe a 4 channel amp, just don't really want to shell out the dough/rewire a bunch of shit to put in the amp.
