when i was recently doing some car shopping, it became very clear that you look at the base model of whatever car you're looking at. a $21k Accord is the same as the $33k Accord except is has 12k less shyt in it. same chassis, same body, same interior core, same car basically. you can add leather to a sedan for $800-$1000. no reason to pay $7k more for leather.
i'm very happy with my 2014 Accord Sport for a whopping $22k. The CVT is genius and gives the car plenty of speed - 100mph is readily reached without drama.
i went for a new car for a few reasons:
a good quality car doesn't depreciate much. 2012 Accords were still above $20k and despite being higher trim levels the technology was still less than a new base model.
technology and integration has made HUGE gains in the past year or two. I have an 8" screen in my car as factory.
a new car has 0% or less than 1% financing. you save money over the life of the car compared to a 5% used car loan.
a new car has a year or two with little to no maintenance costs. a two year old car has maintenance costs.
a premium trim level will depreciate much faster than a base model.
to compare, i used the True Cost to Own site to compare models and trim.
