Considering replacing front speakers

Currently I have a set of SPX-137R. I haven't been really pleased with the midbass that I get out of them. I know they are only 5.25" but that's about all I can fit in my Grand Am without modifications. I could possibly fit a 6.5 but not sure about depth and all. I haven't had the chance to deaden my doors. Anyways, I was wondering if the Dayton reference series would be an upgrade for the midbass or a downgrade? I like the tweeter from the alpines just not the midbass. I was looking at either the 5" or the 6"(if i could fit it). I don't want to modify anything. Anyone have any suggestions? Any other DIY speakers that would be an upgrade but not break my piggy bank? Thanks.

Umm try deadening your doors first. It makes a world of a difference. I'v got alpine type r's. threy are not all that greate comps to begin with, but after i deadnd my doors they didnt sound bad at all.
