Considering amp upgrade?

Let's begin with my system. I have a Kenwood head unit, 2 JBL GTO1004D 10 inch subs rated at 500 watts rms for the pair, and a Rockford Fosgate Punch 360a2 amp (about 8 years old). My amp quit working, I thought it was blown, but it seems to be working well after reconnecting all wires. I would like something that puts out 500 watts, but not sure what to get or if it will be worth spending the money. My amp mounts under the seat, I have 16 inches X 10 inches to work with, so not a lot of high output amps will fit. What do you think, would an amp upgrade be worth it, and if so any suggestions? I am not sure on a budget, probably around 200 bucks. Thanks for any input.

I think you'll be disappointed with Fosgate's new stuff compared to your old 360a2 (loved that amp!) I'd maybe look into the Alpine PDX-1.600 or something along those lines. It will be a tad more than your budget but will definitely fit. I think they can be had for around $275 shipped. Or look for an older MRD-M605, which is the smaller version of the amp I'm selling (MRD-M1005... probably too much for your subs). I'm pretty sure you can pick up a new one for ~$200 shipped. There are a lot of brands out there... Alpine just tends to have a small footprint compared to others, and I've always had good luck with them.

I know the 360a2's are great amps, so will a new one improve my system? My amp works fine, I am just curious to see if a new one would improve SQ. The JBL amp is out of my price range and will not fit under my seat. I want an amp that will fit in that space, 16 inches x 10 inches. I like the alpine amps, but they are all mono and designed to run at 2 ohms, so the power wont be there with my setup (4 ohms). Thanks for any suggestions.

honestly id keep it

if the amp is working fine after 8 years most likely you dont abuse your system

the gains you will get by getting a 500 watt amp will be minimal, especially at the price range you are looking at

save your 200 and if your amp goes out later then you have money to upgrade it with something better later

The amp was bought used about 7-8 maybe more years ago. It has not been used all that time, but is indeed a decent amp. My subs could handle more watts, and I hate the connectors on this amp (wires dont want to stay put). As said, only way I will spend the money is if there will be an improvement in SQ, but after looking I have came up with nothing good to fit me besides that rockford amp above, which isnt as good as my a2 it seems. Any more info on whether or not to upgrade is appreciated. Thanks.

Keep what you have. I don't think you will notice a difference with a new amp, especially if you are driving subwoofers with it. Getting a higher power amp will gain you a few decibels.
