connectinc car speakers to home stereo

There should be ok to do? Won't hurt the speakers or the stereo?

I want to test the speakers out as they won't fit in my car yet, until I get some brackets so I thought i'd hook em up to my stereo in my room.

For just testing purposes, it won't hurt anything. Don't expect them to sound good unmounted.

Some receivers will play into a 4 ohm load, some won't...

Make sure the amp is putting out a 4 ohm load...alot of home audio is 8 ohms.
