Computer problem... reguarding sound

Awile back i posted about a friend having some computer problems, I it working for about an hour or so, but then installed a lot of things, and restarted now its not wokring again.

Whenever i go to play something in a p2p program, it just doesnt even try to play the song, doesnt do anything...

I open the file with windows media player, and i get the follow error message:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file becuase there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

I just installed the latest verson of direct x and WMP, and the sound was working before.... just out of nowhere it stopped, its on windows xp home edition.

Its an onboard card, meaning its directly on the motherboard, buddy just foudn that out after he bought a new card.. and couldnt take the other one out.

I tryed finding the latest drivers, but all the current ones are for widnows 9x, cant find anything for xp... its been working fine for the longest time on xp, then all of the sudden just... stopped, i got it to work again not knowing what i did, and then it stopped again...

i believe the driver for the onboard card was either corrupted or deleted... go to the manufacturers website of the computer (motherboard) and download and install the correct drivers and patches...
