I have an older gateway desktop just within the few days my cat5 connection has been really slow, called time warner and they hooked up my modem to usb. What do I need to buy to make my cat5 connection strong again?

A USB modem will be slower than a modem hooked directly to your computer using a cat cable.

yes I know but the cat5 connection was very slow almost dialup slow, so the tech hooked up the usb to the modem. Something is wrong with the cat5 connection on my desktop what do i need to buy to fix it?

Ummmmm. Do you have a router in between your modem and computer?

Mine took a dump once and it slowed everything to a crawl. Sometimes my internet wouldnt work at all.

You could try buying a new nic card. They're not very expensive.

I think it has more to do with time warner than it does you. Then again, maybe not?

When I first got interwebs at my present location, it was super slow and would cut out randomly, turned out my modem took a dump //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif . Called Time Warner, they did a packet loss test, found massive packet loss, and send a tech out the next day to give me a new modem + free turbo boost for a month.

It's more likely that you're infected by a botnet or some other software issue slowing your computer down. It's VERY unlikely to be an issue with your ethernet connection. Did changing to USB help? I would expect it didn't or maybe you just think it did.

its not the TW modem and yes when he connected to usb is was like night and day, If I remember correctly he said I needed a new card but cant remember what it was called?

Odd... cables can go bad due to broken connections, but they are usually just kinda intermittent or dead. And network cards usually either work or not.

the cable wire is good he tested it, its got something todo with the connection on my pc? somekind of card he said, do you know what its called so I can look one up on ebay? Also when I watch a vid or something it plays for like 2 sec and freezes and starts again, almost like still frames and it has never done that before as well, it was doing that at the time my cat5 connection slowed way down like 1200kps. And it still does that with my usb connection.

You could try buying a new nic card. They're not very expensive.

Type in NIC card into newegg.com. Any of the ones from d-link/linksys/netgear will be fine.
